Catalyzing thousands of face-to-face conversations to build connection.

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, we face a choice: will this milestone pass as a ceremonial celebration, or will it become a turning point to renew the civic bonds that hold us together?

The American Conversation Project (ACP), an initiative of the National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC), offers a powerful and scalable model to strengthen civic health and build common ground. By catalyzing thousands of local, community-led conversations across the country, and equipping leaders with tools to gather localized insights, connect communities, and spark civic action, ACP will help lay the groundwork for a more resilient democracy.

Rising polarization and social fragmentation are fraying our shared sense of community. Yet, in communities across the country, people still experience moments of pride, hope, and connection.

The 250th anniversary provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity to listen deeply and purposefully, so that the voices of everyday Americans can shape how we imagine our collective future. Community foundations are uniquely positioned to convene trusted partners, create spaces for dialogue, and translate listening into sustained local action.

Conversations lead to connection, Connections increase civic health. Greater civic health leads to better outcomes.

When people come together to talk, listen, and share their experiences, conversations build genuine human connection. These connections foster trust, understanding, and a shared sense of belonging—the essential ingredients of a healthy civic life.

As these connections grow, communities become more resilient, collaborative, and civically engaged. Stronger civic health isn’t just an abstract ideal; it leads to measurable improvements in real-world outcomes—from increased participation in local problem-solving and volunteering, to stronger social networks, more responsive institutions, and better community well-being. By sparking thousands of conversations across the country, the American Conversation Project aims to strengthen the civic fabric that underpins a thriving democracy.
